“Theories of Seeing: Cinemato(po)graphies” is a conceptual project imagined to be located in Des Moines Art Center, featuring a unique blend of art and film in an engaging outdoor setting. This inaugural “Cinemato(po)graphies Festival” invites guest curators each week to pair a work of art from the DMAC’s collection with a carefully selected film, creating thematic connections and stimulating thought-provoking discussions. The festival’s highlight occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, where attendees gather in the courtyard for curated screenings of the chosen films, accompanied by viewings of the corresponding art pieces and interactive discussions led by the guest curators. The project begins with an in-depth analysis of the cinematography of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window,” serving as a lens to explore the intersection of visual storytelling in film and art. Subsequently, insights from this analysis advise the design of the courtyard film festival area at the Des Moines Art Center, enhancing the overall experience for attendees and promoting a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of cinema and visual art.
In this design, the concept of “under” and “above” plays a central role in shaping both the physical space and the experiential narrative of the film festival environment. “Under” signifies the immersive realm beneath the tribune, where visitors are enveloped in a multi-sensory experience amidst shallow pools and curated artwork. Here, individuals can wander, interact with the art, and engage with the tranquil surroundings, creating moments of introspection. Conversely, “above” represents the elevated space where the film festival unfolds. The steps, serving as seating platforms, elevate attendees above ground level, providing a commanding view of the courtyard and cinematic screenings. This elevated perspective not only enhances sightlines but also fosters a sense of grandeur and communal gathering as viewers come together to enjoy the films under the open sky.
The interplay between these two realms—under and above—creates a dynamic spatial narrative that invites exploration and immersion. It embodies a holistic approach to design, where every element, from the physical layout to the experiential flow, is carefully orchestrated to evoke a sense of wonder and engagement. Whether meandering through the tranquil waters below or perched atop the seating platforms above, visitors are invited to embark on a journey that transcends the ordinary, enriching their experience of art and cinema in unexpected and memorable ways.
